How to Store a Human Hair Wig So It Lasts (By Texture)

Storage ruins more wigs than washing does

A wig that's washed properly and then stored badly will still end up looking terrible. Folding a straight wig leaves creases that need a steamer to remove. Hanging a curly wig by the cap stretches it. Storing a braided wig in a bag for six months sets the braids.

The rule is simple: every texture needs a different storage method, because the hair's own weight and pattern determine what shape it wants to hold.

Before you store anything: wash it

Never store a wig that has been worn and not washed. Body oils, product build-up and sweat attract dust and dull the hair permanently. Wash it, let it dry fully, then store it.

Method 1: Straight and wavy wigs

The mistake: folding it flat in a drawer, or hanging it by the cap.

Do this instead:

  • Lay it flat, folded loosely, in a drawer or on a shelf — but fold it loosely and never in a tight crease.
  • Better: roll it. Lay the hair in a straight line, fold the wig in half lengthwise, then roll it loosely from the hairline end. Rolling creates no crease lines.
  • Better still: use a mannequin head or a wig stand. If you wear a style more than once a week, keep it on a stand permanently.
  • Put a silk scarf over it if it's in a drawer — cotton snags and dulls the hair.

If you hang a straight wig, hang it by the wefted band at the back with the hair folded over a wide hanger, never by the cap alone.

Method 2: Curly wigs (jerry curl, deep wave, water wave)

The mistake: hanging it up so the curls stretch out, or flattening it in a bag.

Do this instead:

  • Always on a wig stand or mannequin head. Curly hair needs volume to hold its shape, and hanging by the cap pulls it straight.
  • Use a stand wider than the wig. A narrow stand compresses the curls against the sides and flattens them.
  • Add a silk scarf or satin bonnet if the wig is in a dusty space. Dust is the main thing that dulls curly hair over time.
  • Don't refreshen with water spray right before storing — it can leave a water mark on the lace. If the curls are flat, mist lightly and reshape, then let it dry fully before storing.

Method 3: Dense afro and kinky wigs (180%–250%)

The mistake: using a plastic bag. Dense hair traps moisture, and trapped moisture plus no airflow causes mould and a permanent bad smell that survives washing.

Do this instead:

  • On a wide wig stand, in breathable space. A wide stand keeps the coils from being crushed.
  • Never in a sealed plastic bag. If it must be boxed, use a box with ventilation holes and a silk scarf over the hair.
  • Separate the coils with your fingers before storing so the roots don't mat together.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight. Colour fades fastest in direct light, and a 250% density unit has a lot of surface area.

Method 4: Braided wigs

The mistake: folding them to fit in a drawer, or hanging them on a thin hook.

Do this instead:

  • Hang them. Braided wigs should hang, with the braids falling freely. A wide hanger or a dedicated wig hanger with a wide bar is ideal.
  • Wrap the braids in a silk scarf to keep dust out and stop the ends from fraying.
  • Never fold them. A fold in a braid is a permanent crease that no amount of steaming fully fixes.
  • Keep them away from heat. Braided hair is more fragile than loose hair because the tension is already there.

The three rules that apply to everything

  1. Cool, dark, dry. Not a hot car, not a windowsill, not a bathroom cabinet above the shower.
  2. Breathable. Silk or satin, never sealed plastic for long periods.
  3. Dry before it goes away. Damp hair stored anywhere will smell. This is the single most common storage complaint we get.

Quick reference

Texture Store it Never
Straight / wavy Rolled loosely, or on a stand Folded tightly, or hung by the cap
Curly On a wide wig stand Hanging, or in a bag
Afro / kinky On a wide stand, breathable Sealed plastic bag
Braided Hanging, with a silk scarf Folding

How long can a wig be stored?

Properly stored, a good human hair wig will keep its condition for years. The enemies are heat, humidity, direct light and time compressed. Rotate two or three wigs if you wear them regularly — the hair gets time to recover its shape, and you stop relying on one wig.
