Wig Cap Size Guide | Measure Once, Order Right
Get the size right and you will never think about it again
A wig that fits properly is the single biggest difference between "this looks great" and "this looks like a wig." And it costs nothing to get right — you need a soft measuring tape and about two minutes. Most cap problems come from guessing, not from bad product.
Here is how to measure, what the sizes actually mean, and what to do if you land between two.
Step 1: Get the right tool
A soft tailor's measuring tape. If you don't have one, a piece of string and a ruler works fine. Do not use a rigid tape or a piece of paper — they will not follow the curve of your head and you will get a number that is 1–2 cm too small.
Step 2: Find the right starting point
Stand in front of a mirror. Place the middle of the tape just above your eyebrows, across your forehead. This is roughly where a wig's front hairline sits once installed. If you measure around the top of your head like a hat, you will come out about 2 cm small — that is the single most common measuring mistake.
Step 3: Measure the circumference
Bring the tape down the side of your head, just above your ears (not over them), around the back of your head at the base of the skull, and meet it at the front. Keep the tape snug but not tight — you should be able to slip one finger underneath.
Write the number down. Do not round it to the nearest inch.
What the numbers mean
| Size | Circumference | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 51–54 cm (20–21.25 in) | Many women with a fine frame. If you measure under 54 cm, an average cap will slide and lift at the back. |
| Average | 54–58 cm (21.25–22.8 in) | The most common size. Our standard caps are made to this range and fit the majority of people. |
| Large | 58–63 cm (22.8–24.8 in) | A fuller frame, or a head that sits higher at the back. Average caps will feel tight at the temples and ride up. |
Measurements of a cap we ship
Our standard cap, measured inside:
- Circumference: 54–58 cm (adjustable via the back straps, which extend roughly 2 cm)
- Front to back (depth): 14.5–15.5 cm
- Ear to ear: 13.5–14.5 cm
- Adjustability: two elastic straps with metal sliders, plus four combs
- Custom sizing: available on request at no extra charge — see the note below
If you land between two sizes
Between small and average? Order average, and if it's loose, use the back straps to take up the extra. A slightly loose cap can be tightened; a tight cap cannot be loosened.
Between average and large? Order large, or order average and add a wig grip band underneath for security. Going up a size with a grip band is more comfortable than straining an average cap.
Between large and extra-large? Message us before you order. We can make a custom cap size for you, and we'll tell you honestly if your measurement is likely to work with a standard cap instead.
Custom sizing is free
If your measurement falls outside 54–58 cm, contact us with your number and we'll make the cap to your measurement at no extra cost. Custom sizes take 2–3 extra days to process, so order a little earlier than the standard processing time.
Head shape matters too
Two people with identical 56 cm measurements can still need different caps. If you have a high crown or a prominent occipital bone at the back, an average cap can ride up even when the measurement is right. Our 4x4 closure construction sits flatter and is more forgiving in that case. If you have a very square or very round head shape, the same applies in reverse.
If you tell us your measurement and your head shape when you order, we can pick the right cap for you before it ships.
Quick answers
Does the cap size change how the wig looks?
Yes. A cap that is too small pulls the hairline backward and makes the hairline look tight and high. A cap that is too large slides forward and creates a gap between the lace and your forehead. Both are immediately visible and both are fixable — but only by getting the size right the first time.
Is the average cap adjustable enough?
It covers 54–58 cm, and the elastic straps add roughly 2 cm of adjustment on top of that. In practice the average cap fits from about 53 to 60 cm depending on head shape.
How do I measure for a full lace wig?
Identically. The cap size doesn't change with lace construction. What full lace changes is that the hairline can be laid down flat in any direction, so the cap needs to fit well for the lace to lie flat.
What if I order the wrong size?
Unused hair can be returned or exchanged within 30 days — see our return policy. If your measurement was correct but the size didn't work, tell us what happened and we'll work it out.
